I have a G3010 scanner and have installed the basic driver for this, but the scanner has a facility to scan film and transparencies which was O.K. on the old system (Windows XP ), but is not supported for this new system, which is Windows 8. Is there a free driver to let me do this, as the only difference is my update of computer? When bought from new, which this was, the driver discs covered all this.

You will have to remove the current installed driver. Use the normal program uninstallation, then run a copy of CCLeaner to delete the obsolete registry entries. After the old version was uninstalled, reboot the PC then visit the product page on HP Support. Select Windows 8 (32 or 64bit) from the drop down list with operating systems then download the installation package.
